Muscle spasms have ruined many a good dream and many a good day, too. There is nothing “dreamy” about muscle spasms and, because your body has 600 different muscles, there is too much opportunity for muscle spasms if your body isn’t functioning correctly.

There is a wide range of methods attempting to temporarily control muscle spasms at the level of the muscle. But, the brain and its messenger nerves are ultimately responsible for controlling all 600 muscles, so it makes good sense to look there first.

When nerves are impinged, or affected by the misalignment of the spinal bones, there is a decrease in the ability of the brain to transfer information to the muscles and organs of the body. Without the proper information, the muscles just do not know how to react. Muscle spasms are just one of the ways the body reacts due to spinal bone misalignment, also called Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

Subluxations are responsible for a wide range of involuntary muscle spasms. Asthma, for instance, involves involuntary muscle spasms. Lung function is dependent upon a continuous flow of nerve energy from the brain. If interfered with, the lungs’ surrounding muscles are unable to function at 100%. They can become spastic and compress or squeeze the air sacs and airways of the lungs, resulting in an inability to breath.

Normal muscle contractions take place continuously throughout the stomach, intestines and colon. Interfere with the nerves which lead to the digestive organs and you lose proper function, which can result in stomach cramps, indigestion, gas, constipation or diarrhea.

With that nightmare back spasm, we see a reaction to the malfunction of the nerves that regulate relaxation and contraction of the muscles that help with movement and holding the body in balance. Paraspinal muscles react quickly and, sometimes, violently, to spinal bone misalignments. Healthy muscle patterns are altered by subluxations and areas of muscle spasm can become very ingrained with time. Chiropractic addresses the cause of these muscle spasms by releasing the nerve pressure and allowing the nerves to transmit the brain’s controlling messages to the muscles. The muscles can regain normal function and the symptoms of muscle spasms clear up.
